We often speak with business owners who have used a website development company to do a new website for them, but despite what can be a fairly significant investment their site is just not working for them. The sales leads are no better than they had from their old site and they are not getting any more visitors. In some cases enquiry levels may actually have fallen.  The new site looks absolutely fantastic so what is the problem?

The truth is that having a great looking website is not enough anymore.  All websites have to be actively managed like any other employee of your business.  To be able to manage how your website is performing you have to be able to measure its performance – web analytics, such as Google Analytics, will help you do this.

Effective Internet Marketing has 3 key elements:

  1. You need an effective website that has all the functionality you need it to have for it to achieve its objectives (all websites should have an objective by the way!)
  2. Having had your website designed and built you need to have a strategy in place to drive traffic to it – either Paid Search (PPC) or organic search (SEO)
  3. Finally, now you have a website designed and built with specific objectives in mind, you have a traffic generation strategy in place – now you need to convert that traffic into sales! 

Like anything in life, not everything is equal, some web designers are better than others. Let’s be brutally honest some website designers are hopeless and you wonder how they make a living. 

Poor website performance is not simply down to the website designer though, we regularly meet business owners and sales directors of quite large companies who seem intent on selecting their website provider on the basis of price alone.  This is false economy – whatever you might save will be far outweighed by the lost income you will suffer because of poor sales revenues generated by the website. 

Worse still, unless you have chosen to work with genuine internet professionals, such as WSI IMS, when you go back to your web designer they may not have the knowledge or expertise to put the site right.  There are very few internet marketing professionals outside the WSI family who have access to global experts in every aspect of the internet.
